To the west of Bergen on the island of Herdla (part of the municipality of Askøy) the Germans built an airfield and fortified the area during the Second World War. Today the northern part of the island is one of the largest bird sanctuaries in Norway. The area is still riddled with remnants from the Second World War including gun positions, bunkers, tunnels, caves and remains of runways and various buildings.
