Shortcuts to the True Trail
Run #1334 - Wednesday 19 July 2017 | |
For the time of year (in the middle of the summer break), a largish crowd turned up for the run, on what must have been one of the best days so far this summer. The hare usually lays themed runs, and today was no exception and included FOUR drink stops! The theme turned out to be "Lyststed in Bergen". "Lyststed", literally "pleasure place", were grand lodgings well-heeled citizens built outside the city limits in the 17th and 18th centuries. Some are still standing, although these days usually squashed in between modern buildings. After the chalk talk, ON-OUT was called accompanied by the hare's pooch hanging out a window on the second floor and howling its head off. The trail took the pack past the old wooden buildings on Fjellsiden and ON-ON to Fjellveien. The first drink stop was at "Mon Plaisir", a folly built by the owner of "Christinegaaard Hovedgaard", a "lyststed" from the 18th century. After a short and enjoyable stop in the fine weather, a meandering trail lead us to "Christinegaaard Hovedgaard", where the hare had a chat with the chap in charge and we were given a short tour of the building. The trail then took us in the direction of Sandviken and past "Brødretomten", a "lyststed" from 1797. The next stop was at "Måseskjæret no. 1", a "lyststed" from 1795. The hare tried to get the pack moving a bit faster so not to find the pub at the next drink stop closed. With this threat hanging over us, the pack legged it to the Fisheries Museum just in time to purchase beer before they closed. As we were running way behind schedule, the hare CANCELLED the third drink stop and had us heading for the final drink stop at Dr. Wiesener instead. After a relaxing stop, the pack shortcut to the ON-INN. In the circle, the usual punishments were dolled out. Before the circle was closed, we were treated to the very sorry sight of an ex-RA who refused to have anything to do with a well-deserved tea bag for having turned up in new shoes. It must be noted that said ex-RA always used to take great pleasure in making sure that everyone got at least one tea bag during his tenure. The evening was rounded off with an excellent pasta dish washed down with beer. |
